Transform Your Breathing
to Quiet Your Mind
and Heal Your Life

By Marilyn B. Gordon

Your breath has the capacity to help you move from one
state of consciousness to another. When you concentrate
on breathing, your mind is able to gather together all its
scattered energies. Your mind becomes much more focused,
quiet, and clear. In fact, when you focus on your breathing,
you are in the present, in the here and now. This will also
help you to ease pain and soften tension.

You can take a long, slow breath in, and you imagine that
you're breathing directly into your experience of your issue.
Your experience might be a pain or a difficult thought or a
deep old wound. Breathe into it and then breathe it out.

In yoga, many people breathe into the stiffness in their
body while doing yoga postures. This can dissolve the
tightness and create a new fluidity and flexibility. The
practice of breathing in yoga is called pranayama. Prana
is the very breath of life itself, the life force in the form
of the breath. Yogis have believed for centuries that prana
or breath actually moves consciousness. This means that
breathing actually moves matter and thought or awareness.
So when you breathe into an issue, you can dissolve it.

The life force is manifested in many forms, one of which is the breath. When you focus on breathing, you can actually redirect how you experience the life force within you. When you take a breath and breath it into a difficulty or a problem, the problem transforms.

Rapid, Anxious or Constricted Breathing

Notice your breathing when you feel anxious and uncentered. It's high up in your chest, and it's shallow and rapid. Some people feel as if their feet are going to leave the ground. Others break out into pronounced sweats. Rapid breathing and fear thoughts can create the perception of anxiety. By breathing more deeply and bringing your breath down into your belly, you'll feel a greater sense of peace. If your breathing is constricted, when you open and relax it, you're able to release and transform old habits of mind with greater ease.

Try Transforming Your Experiences with Your Breathing

If you're feeling a difficult emotion or dealing with a life challenge, close your eyes for a moment, and take a deep breath in as you direct it toward the challenge. Breathe out and release it. Keep doing this until you feel a shift in the way you feel or perceive your situation. Breathing this way can work miracles for your life.
