Set Your Goals Straight

By Tony Segal

Setting goals in our life is a crucial factor in
achieving a successful life. How come so
many of us don't bother?

Every life coach you turn to will tell you, sooner
or later, that the first thing you should do while
trying to improve your life, is to sit down and
set goals for youself. "You cannot pick up a book
or participate in a training program without
the author or instructor teaching you the power
of goal setting", says Hilton Johnson, a sales
coach in an article on topachievement.com.

And yet, says Johnson, most people spend more
time planning a two week vacation than setting life
goals. "People just don't do it. They leave their lives
to chance, and usually end up broke by the time
they reach retirement".

Why is it so hard for people to set goals? Initially,
because in order to do so we have to write it down,
and than commit ourselves to attaining these
goals. And that means a lot of work. But, Ahron
Mendel, a life coach for the past five years says,
if we don't bother to write it down and commit
ourselves - it will affect our performance. "Goals
motivate people to exert the effort necessary to
meet task demands, and to persist over time. It
also directs the individual's attention to relevant
task features, behaviors to be performed, and
potential outcomes. Goals can affect how people
process information. Goals help people focus on the
task, select and apply appropriate strategies, and
monitor goal progress".

"It’s been said that everyone has goals, whether we know it or not", says Dr. Phillip E. Humbert, a personal success strategist. "We have goals to keep our current job, or to get a different one. We have goals to save for the future, to travel, to take a vacation, or to purchase the things we need and want to make our lives more enjoyable".

But, says Humbert, there is a big difference between those obvious goals that we all share, and the ones top achievers have. "Top achievers are very intentional and focused on their goals, while many of the rest of us are not", he explains. "Top achievers understand the basic skills for setting and reaching goals, and they know how to design goals that create success".

So how exactly are they doing it? By using ten principals that never fail, says Humbert. Ten principals we can all adopt, if we really wish to have a successful life.

1.
Be Specific. Top achievers know that in order to reach their goals, the brain must know exactly what they are trying to accomplish. Therefore they never use vague words like “some”, “a little bit”, or “more”. You want to lose 8 pounds and reach a weight of 175? Specify those exact numbers, says Humbert. Want to save $200 this month? Be specific. "Your brain can help you accomplish almost anything, if it knows precisely what you are aiming for".
