It's Easy To Change
By CD Mohatta
You can break through your self imposed limits
by choosing a few select phrases to repeat to
yourself at key times. My favorite one is,
"It’s easy."
As is so often the case, I first noticed this effect
not with myself, but when it happened to
someone else. I had a friend who suffered from
depression. I noticed when I spoke to her that
a phrase she would use again and again in
many different circumstances, was, "It’s hard."
This started to sound like a negative mantra.
It’s then that I suspected if you reinforce the
idea that life is hard or things are hard to achieve,
that you will believe it and find life just as you expect.
If that’s the case, the reverse should also be true.
The idea of using key positive phrases is similar to the
idea of using affirmations. However, affirmations are
usually longer, less natural-sounding phrases, and
not generally designed to use on the spot when you
are challenged to act or believe one way or another.
We all have short statements we make often. What do you say when you are surprised? Gosh? Oh, WOW? Whatever it is, know that you have other short statements that are less positive and they play a part in areas where you feel it difficult to make progress. These phrases are indicative of rooted beliefs. If you change the habitual phrase, you can change your belief.
Work on just one at a time until you establish a new phrase as a habit. I especially like, "It’s easy." because I can use it whenever I am learning something new or doing anything that will be good for me, but that I might feel a little reluctant about doing.
To find other positive phrases, look for any negative phrase you use often and simply reverse it. If you say, "I can’t," replace it with, "I can!" "I’m fat!", you might replace with, "I like healthy habits," and so on. You may wish to say to yourself, "I am confident," every time you feel nervous, or since this is just for you, you could say, "I am the queen," if it will give you the desired confidence!
