Want to Live Longer? Move
to the Countryside
Do you live in a big crowded city? Do you need to travel
a few hours before you can enjoy the fresh air of the
countryside? If so - maybe it's time for you to move to
the country or even to a nice quiet suburb. It seems
that living in a rural area, closer to nature, gives you
a much better chance to enjoy good health and live
longer. New research conducted at the Tokyo Medical School in Japan surveyed 3,144 people over the age of 80, and found that those who lived in green areas with plenty of trees, green grass and parks where they could take long peaceful walks, lived longer and were healthier than those who lived in crowded cities, enjoyed little sun during the day and generally walked through noisy, traffic filled streets.
Acupuncture - The Best Remedy
For Chronic Headaches
Do you constantly suffer from headaches? If you
do - and if painkillers of any kind don’t help - why
not try acupuncture? According research
conducted in Britain, acupuncture is the most
efficient remedy for chronic headaches.
Researchers followed 400 people who suffered
from headaches several times a week. They
divided the participants into two groups; one received up to 12 acupuncture treatments a week while the other group was treated with conventional painkillers. These treatments lasted for an entire year, and at the end of this period the frequency of headaches among the first group dropped by 34% compared to only 15% in for the second group. The first group also experienced a decrease in pain level, and their need for painkillers dropped by 15%. Researchers believe that acupuncture releases natural painkillers (endorphins) into the body. Another reason for acupuncture’s efficiency is that it helps to balance the widening and constricting of blood vessels, thought to be the main cause of migraines.
Meditation Decreases Blood Pressure
For years, people who practiced meditation touted its
positive effects on their health. Recent studies
conducted at the Medical College of Georgia, US,
found this to be true: Meditation, scientists claim,
decreases blood pressure by reducing the constriction
of blood vessels thereby decreasing risk of heart disease.
Researchers conducted two tests with 18 people who
practiced meditation daily for many years and a control
group of 14 very healthy middle aged adults who did not
meditate. In the first test, both groups were simply at rest with eyes open. In the second test, the meditation group was told to close their eyes and begin meditating. The control group was told to close their eyes and relax as completely as possible. During the resting session the meditation group showed significant decreases in systolic blood pressure and vasoconstriction while meditating, compared with increases in the control group. The meditation group showed a 6.5% decrease in vasoconstriction during meditation, compared with a 1.6 percent increase in the control group during eyes-closed relaxation.
Suppressed Anger Can Damage Your Health
We all know that venting anger and hostility does not contribute
to better health. However a recent study claims that suppressing
anger is just as bad, more so for women than for men, although
suppressed anger in men appears to affect their health as well.
The study shows that suppressed anger itself is not the major
problem, but rather the lack of control over situations. The study,
conducted in Michigan, analyzed responses to authority figures
that yelled at people for something they had not done. Women
who suppressed their anger had a higher mortality rate over the
years, more so than men. Women who suppressed their anger in
confrontations with their spouses had twice the mortality risk. In couples where both suppressed anger, mortality rates went up among women, but not among men. Another study indicated that women who vented their anger were more pessimistic, lacked social support, sensed limited control over their lives, and had more health problems.
